How colours can help you sell your home

painting-homeIf you’re considering selling your home, then your primary aim should be making it look as appealing as physically possible. By doing this, you’ll be able to attract more viewers, which in turn is likely to filter down to more offers.

Redecorating your home can be a great way to achieve this. During the process, however, the question of whether colour matters is going to crop up. If indeed colours do matter, which is the best to use?

Psychological research has shown that colour doesn’t just play a role in how aesthetically attractive a property is deemed to be. It also has a huge impact on the way we feel. Studies have shown that some colours can even increase body and blood temperature. Here’s what you need to do to harness the power of colours to sell your home.

Think like a home-buyer

Take a look around your home and think about what type of buyer you’re looking to attract. If you’ve got several bedrooms, it’s likely that your house will garner interest from families or young couples.

After you’ve worked it out, it’ll be worth planning your home’s colours around this. If you’re aiming for families, plan on a few of your home’s bedrooms being for children and include some more muted colours. These have been shown to promote relaxation, whereas brighter colours are more likely to get people excited. The latter definitely isn’t something your new buyers will want when trying to get their children to sleep.

Know your colours

There are two main groups that colours fall into – warms and cools. The warm colours consist of oranges, yellows, and reds. Cool colours consist of greens, blues, lavenders and grey. Each of these colours influences its own set of emotions, so you need to plan out what sorts of feelings each room should conjure.

Kitchens, for example, aren’t typically places for relaxing. They’re always the centre of activity in a home, so you should go with a warmer, bright colour such as yellow or apricot.

Feel free to take risks

While it’s important to note that black should be used with extreme caution, it could be worth taking some risks with your painting. Black and white is without a doubt a safe bet for housing colours, but it’s not going to help you to build any atmosphere. With this in mind, you’ll run the risk of losing any personality your home has.

If you’re considering repainting your home and changing the colouring scheme, ask your friends and family what they think. When it involves your property, it’s hard to be unbiased, so they’ll be able to offer a fresh perspective on any ideas you should try out.
